GEORGE L. BROOKS

George L. Brooks was an early gas station entrepreneur.  At least some of his stations were:

 1925-1929:  5940/600 Excelsior Blvd.

 1927:  On July 30 he opened a new station at Excelsior and Monk (now Blake) Avenues in Hopkins.  George M. Miles was the attendant.  At the Grand Opening he promised “One Quart of Good Oil and a Useful Souvenir Free to every car purchasing five gallons or more of gasoline”  Gas was 14 cents/gallon.  They carried 100 percent Pure Penn Oil, and had a free wash rack. 

1938-1956:  4300 Excelsior Blvd.


 George and Annette Brooks lived in several places in the Brookside area:

  • 1930:  4101 Brookside Ave.
  • 1933:  3156 Dakota Ave.
  • 1934-41:  4137 Vernon (occupation:  chauffeur until he opened the station)
  • 1942:  Address of house changed to 4153 Vernon
