The Caring Youth Award was started in 1990 by Doris and Roland Larson at Westwood Lutheran Church. Its purpose is to “encourage and reward both a day-to-day lifestyle of caring concern for others and unselfish volunteerism.”
The program went City-wide in 1991. The recognition ceremony was emceed by Diana Pierce of KARE11-TV, remarks were offered by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Holstrom, and the program included a letter of support from First Lady Barbara Bush.
In 1992, Mayor Lyle Hanks and Senator Ted Mondale participated in the recognition ceremony, and the program included a letter of support from Rosalynn Carter.
The program has evolved into a truly community-wide effort, and is planned by representatives from several community organizations.
