WAYZATA BLVD. BUILDINGS – SOUTH OF I-394

This is a road that has had many names:  Superior Blvd., Wayzata Blvd., Highway 12, and Highway 394.  The name Wayzata endures on the service road to the freeway today.

Wayzata Blvd. was for all intents and purposes the border between St. Louis Park and Golden Valley, but there were some exceptions.  SLP annexed the Shelard property just east of Highway 169 in 1955, and there was a land swap on the east side.  McCarthy’s Cafe was in SLP, but sat on the north side, almost like an island.

There was a clear transition that can be seen by looking through the SLP directories from 1933 (the first one issued) and 1964.  At first, Wayzata Blvd. was dotted with residences.  In the mid-1950s, many of those residences gave way to small office buildings built by local merchants.  By the 1980s and ’90s, more and more apartment buildings and office complexes encompass entire blocks.  We are thankful to the St. Louis Park Office of Assessing for access to photos taken decades ago that show us what prior buildings looked like.

A date after an address indicates when a present building was built.  The years indicated in the bulleted description are based on available sources and the buildings may have existed before or after the years indicated.  Much of the information below is taken from the St. Louis Park directories, which were scanned by the Hennepin County Library, posted to their website, and are searchable.  Underlined items are links to more information.

  • The Marquette Corporation building was apparently built in 1964, according to an ad from a January business supplement from 1965.  According to a 1965 ad, the company was founded in 1918. It manufactured home appliances and washers and dryers used at laundromats and dry cleaners. It also made a variety of automotive parts, and was the “official welder at the Indianapolis Speedway for over 15 years!” There were other plants in Duluth, Toronto, and Bangor, Pennsylvania. The President in 1965 was Glenn E. Seidel.

Although this building was located in the southwest sector of the intersection of Highways 100 and 12, it was originally in Golden Valley.

From at least 1933 until 1944, Orrie C. Ward’s Stables were listed at Wayzata Blvd. and Texas.  The Stables had been built by M.P. Johnson, who bought the land from “Peanut John.”

By June 1946, the property was renamed The Turf and Paddock Stables, “Under New Management.” It ended in a terrible fire on June 12, 1949, when the barn went up in flames, presumably starting in a hay bale.  Six horses died and another 18 were saved by firemen and passers by.  The owner was again listed as M.P. Johnson.
